Scene2’s Solution

Design & Production

Working in partnership with The Department, Scene2 designed and produced a striking large-scale installation for the launch of HP’s new Dragonfly Elite Laptop.

Inspired by the distinctive form and iridescent qualities of a dragonfly, the activation centred around a sculptural centrepiece designed to capture attention within high-footfall public locations. The installation was created to communicate the product’s premium design credentials while reinforcing HP’s #LighterThanAir campaign messaging.

Alongside the hero structure, dedicated product display areas were incorporated to showcase the Dragonfly Elite Laptop in a visually engaging and memorable way.

Workshop

The project showcased a range of specialist fabrication techniques and material finishes.

The giant dragonfly wings were constructed using layered 5mm clear acrylic sheets, enhanced with spray-painted finishes, dichroic film laminates, printed transparent vinyl graphics and CNC-cut Dibond components featuring an iridescent finish. Addressable LED tape was integrated throughout the structure, creating dynamic lighting effects that enhanced the installation’s visual impact.

To further elevate the product presentation, bespoke display plinths were fabricated incorporating rotating magnetic levitation devices. This innovative display solution allowed the laptops to appear suspended in mid-air, directly supporting the campaign’s #LighterThanAir positioning.

Installation & Delivery

Scene2 managed the production and installation of the activation, ensuring the structure could be efficiently deployed across high-footfall locations.

Careful consideration was given to transportation, assembly and operational requirements, creating a robust installation capable of maintaining its visual impact throughout the campaign. The completed activation successfully combined sculptural design and innovative product presentation to create a memorable launch experience.

 

Project Overview

To support the launch of the HP Dragonfly Elite Laptop, HP and experiential agency The Department required a visually striking activation capable of showcasing the product’s premium design and ultra-lightweight credentials.

Scene2 was appointed to design and produce a touring installation inspired by the natural beauty and lightweight characteristics of a dragonfly. The resulting structure became the centrepiece of a nationwide activation programme, appearing in selected high-footfall locations across the UK and attracting the attention of commuters, shoppers and technology enthusiasts alike.

The design drew heavily from the intricate structure and iridescent qualities of dragonfly wings. Through a combination of layered acrylic, specialist films, printed graphics, CNC-manufactured components and programmable lighting, Scene2 created a large-scale sculptural installation that shimmered and changed appearance as visitors moved around it.

At the heart of the activation, HP Dragonfly Elite laptops were displayed on bespoke plinths featuring magnetic levitation technology. The floating product displays provided a powerful visual representation of the campaign’s #LighterThanAir message while creating a premium and futuristic brand experience.

The result was an eye-catching touring installation that combined product storytelling, innovative fabrication and experiential design to create a memorable product launch campaign.

Challenges We Overcame

Translating Product Features into Physical Design

The installation needed to communicate the Dragonfly Elite Laptop’s lightweight design and premium engineering through a physical experience. Every aspect of the activation was carefully developed to reinforce these key product attributes.

Combining Specialist Materials

The dragonfly wings required the integration of numerous production techniques and finishes, including acrylic construction, dichroic films, printed graphics, CNC-cut components and programmable lighting systems. Achieving a cohesive final appearance demanded careful coordination throughout production.

Creating a Touring Installation

As the activation was designed to travel between multiple locations, the structure needed to balance visual impact with practical considerations for transportation, assembly and repeated deployment.
