Scene2’s Solution

Design & Production

Working alongside designer Tim McQuillen-Wright, Scene2 helped bring the creative vision for The Gunpowder Plot to life through the production and installation of a series of immersive theatrical environments deep beneath the Tower of London.

The experience combined traditional scenic construction with cutting-edge technology, creating a unique visitor journey that blended live theatre, storytelling and immersive media. Each environment was designed to support a seamless integration of physical sets, live performers and advanced experiential technologies.

Workshop

The project showcased the breadth of Scene2’s in-house production capabilities. Working from our 17,000-square-foot workshop, the team fabricated a series of highly detailed scenic environments, architectural features and interactive set elements inspired by seventeenth-century London.

A wide range of production techniques were utilised throughout the build, including bespoke metalwork, precision carpentry, scenic painting and specialist fibreglass modelling. Every element was carefully crafted to create authentic, historically inspired environments while supporting the technical requirements of the immersive experience.

Installation & Delivery

Following fabrication, the scenic elements were transported to the Tower of London for installation and final finishing.

Working within one of the UK’s most significant historic sites required careful planning and coordination throughout the installation process. Scene2 integrated the scenic environments alongside a complex range of immersive technologies, ensuring the physical sets worked seamlessly with the experience’s live-action and digital elements.

The completed environments provided the foundation for a groundbreaking visitor attraction that combines history, theatre and technology in an entirely new way.

Project Overview

The Gunpowder Plot is an award-winning immersive theatrical experience that transports audiences back to 1605 and places them at the centre of one of the most infamous conspiracies in British history. Located within the Tower of London, the production combines live actors, theatrical storytelling and state-of-the-art immersive technology to create a uniquely engaging historical experience.

Guests become active participants in the narrative, encountering key figures from the Gunpowder Plot while moving through a series of richly detailed environments hidden beneath the historic landmark. Throughout the experience, audiences interact with live performers while engaging with an innovative combination of volumetric holographic projections, virtual reality, motion simulation, 360-degree spatial audio, environmental temperature effects and olfactory stimulation.

Scene2 was appointed to produce and install the physical environments that supported this vision. Working closely with designer Tim McQuillen-Wright and the wider creative team, our role was to transform the design concepts into fully realised scenic environments capable of supporting both the storytelling and extensive technical infrastructure.

The project required a careful balance between theatrical authenticity, visitor durability and technological integration. The result is a highly immersive attraction that combines heritage storytelling with some of the most advanced experiential technologies currently available.

Challenges We Overcame

Working Within a Historic Landmark

Delivering and installing large-scale scenic elements within the Tower of London required careful planning, logistical coordination and sensitivity to the site’s historic significance.

Integrating Advanced Technology

The experience combined multiple immersive technologies, including volumetric holograms, virtual reality, motion simulation and environmental effects. Scenic elements needed to seamlessly accommodate and enhance these technical systems without compromising the visitor experience.

Creating Historically Authentic Environments

The production required environments that convincingly recreated seventeenth-century settings while remaining durable enough to withstand continuous public use and repeated performances.

Results

The Gunpowder Plot successfully reimagines one of Britain’s most significant historical events through a unique combination of theatre, technology and immersive storytelling.

The completed environments provide visitors with a richly detailed and highly engaging journey through the events of 1605, helping blur the boundary between audience and performance. Through expert fabrication, scenic finishing and installation, Scene2 played a key role in bringing this ambitious vision to life.

The project demonstrates Scene2’s ability to deliver complex immersive environments that combine traditional theatrical craftsmanship with cutting-edge experiential technologies, creating memorable visitor experiences within some of the UK’s most iconic venues.
